Betta Fish: Babysitting a betta. How can i fix this to make this fish happy at home when they pick them up next week?
What does this fish need to live their best fish life.

i’d say just make sure the water has been conditioned (i’m only gonna assume you’ll add more) . mine has a live clipping of a house plant, but that’s a personal preference

At least a 5 gallon tank with lots of hiding places. Any sort of plants will do but I find real ones are way better for them. Add a bunch of décore bettas are maximalists. If you’re going for fake plants make sure they’re silk or cotton otherwise they will hurt the fishes fins. They don’t like a lot of flow to the water so I recommend keeping a couple living plants just in case if your filter doesn’t already provides enough of that. If you’re gonna keep plants get nitrogen rich soil and any fish safe aquatic plant supplement online. Also what are you feeding him currently ?

say the fish died and keep it for yourself :Q

add drift wood for tannins, it helps the water quality and fish health, add some more plants and a non color gravel. painted gravel can leak chemicals into the water. betta like laying on leafs, there’s some fabric ones on Amazon that are good, nothing plastic their fins can get torn.

Honestly the best thing to do (goven that I am cannot and AM NOT reccomending theivery) would be to either request the person research fish more or to request that they allow you to keep the fish and do some research yourself.
To really give this fish a better home would take a good bit of money (no more than $150 if your smart) and that’s really a lot of money to spend on a fish that’s not yours. Ofc if you have that sort of money and time that would be wonderful and super admirable.
For now the best things to do are make sure the person is using water conditioner and to remove the plastic plant and put in some life ones, some Java fern, anubias, and pothos would do well and be easy.
If I’m being honest, the fact that there’s not even a filter menas this fish doesn’t have much a chance of being healthy llwithout someone seriously stepping up. Just cause it’s alive doesn’t mean it isn’t living in pain from ammonia poisoning, and suffocating form lack of oxygen in the water, or tearing it’s fin on that plastic plant.
Making sure to say tho that none of this is your fault, and honestly it’s hard to even blame your friend. Ppl just don’t understand what it takes to have a fish, and ignorance doesn’t make you a bad person. It’s so awesome you’re trying to help 🙂

Hide the fish at your house, tell them it died, and get him a proper setup.

Also, Betta fish need water temperature between 77-82. Depending on where you live, and how warm the house is kept, may need a heater. An adjustable heater is best, not the pre-set ones. Those have given me nothing but trouble with my Bettas!🤦♀️

Walmart usually has affordable kits with decent filters if you’re in the US. Playsand makes a great substrate, it just needs a lot of rinsing. then you can get an (adjustable!) heater on amazon for $15-$25, and water conditioner (I recommend seachem prime). Definitely check online groups for plants, but anubias is absolutely a great easy option.

It’s so heartbreaking to constantly see bettas being treated this way. They are such smart, beautiful fish and do not deserve it.
A lot of people have already given good advice (5 gallon tank, live plants, places to hide, etc.) Thank you for trying to improve this betta’s quality of life!
