My son bought this reel from Japan not realising it’s left hand reel. Are the sides able to be swapped. The mechanism seems to be different to his other rod where the opposite side to the handle does screw off?

Hold the rotor/ spool and turn the handle backwards ie towards yourself. Then the handle should unscrew and you can pop the opposite side off and re-assemble on the other side.
Mine unscrew bud, I do remember it being a bit stiff at first but mine does unscrew and let me swap sides.
The opposite side will screw off. Just use something like a rubber glove to increase your grip strength. Shimano caps are notoriously hard to turn if you have sweaty finger.
