I got this 10 (realistically 8) Gallon cube, with 5 pygmy, 3 cory panda and lots of neocaridinas.
Recently I donated my bristlenose due to the aquarium being too small for it and now i was thinking about buying a female koi hoping that it would be better than a male .
Is there any way I can chose a calmer one? Will I have trouble with the neocaridinas?
I will donate the guppies too before buying the betta!

Firstly I can’t tell what if you have one here, but you will get bugged about this, do you have a lid? I have a wild koi female and she is a jumper, you WILL want a lid. From my understanding you should be fine with the neocardinias. I have a smaller tank within amono shrimp and otosynchless and 2 neurites and they seem to do just fine. One of the biggest issues people have is not providing enough cover for the other fish in the tank. If you’re female koi is anything like mine you will find she’s extremely curious about everything even if she necessarily doesn’t want to eat them she even pestered me when I try and add new plants in like she’s a home decorator.
They do sell short lids now for this tank – maybe that helps – beautiful plants!
I’d say enough of hiding space for the shrimpies but be aware that some will become snacks- I’d make sure they have sufficient reproduction rates to maintain a stable colony- once the betta gets older it will hunt less in my experience and apparently there are some that are too lazy or slow or blind to hunt
I personally think the tank is already overstocked. Adding a betta would be too much. Your cories are going to eventually need more space, Pandas are also best kept in groups of 4 or more. If you want a betta I would suggest setting up a bigger tank for the cories (or rehome them) and just keep the betta by herself in this one. She will more than likely eat the shrimp though. Female bettas can be just as aggressive as male bettas, its a misconception that they’re calmer.
Any Betta is likely to eat shrimp if they can. I have a peacefully co-existing Betta and shrimp, but only I think because the Betta was tiny when I got him so the shrimp didn’t look like food. It’s not to do with how calm any Betta is – some females are ridiculously feisty! It’s more just luck – some Bettas love hunting shrimp, others prefer pellets. I don’t think a female is less likely to eat shrimp than a male, it depends on the individual fish.
