Why are you killing things that you can not identify??
Terrible etiquette for wildlife.
Edit: Downvote me all you want. There are native parasitic lamprey, and they are doing nothing wrong. So killing off wildlife without proper identification is just trash.
Edit 2: No evidence of invasive lampreys in Arkansas, this is why it’s important to ID to ensure we aren’t mindlessly killing native species. Published papers state there are five species of Lamprey in Arkansas. Of those, only three are common: Chestnut, Southern Brook, and Least Brook. With the first two being parasitic. Without better photos, we can’t give a positive ID.

We used to catch these on P3X 888. Nasty buggers.

Quick question where abouts did you catch the affected fish. Just the general area, out of curiosity more than anything else
It is not, alas, an eel. But I had this meme all locked and loaded. Couldn’t let it go to waste.

Just a lamprey doing lamprey things. They’re damn ugly, but are interesting animals, and an important part of the ecosystem all the same – I’d leave ’em be next time.
Smallmouth bass are doing just fine, but in many places native lamprey are declining in numbers.
