We had a fire on Feb 1 and since then I have done no tests and no water changes, only been around to feed every couple of days. The tank has power via extension cord. The betta, all but a few nano fish, and at least one shrimp are all still surviving.

  1. I don’t believe in water changes, but a solid top off will do this a lot of good. Sorry this happened to you!

  2. If this was mine I would Do 50% water changes daily til it’s clear. Remove plants and decor wipe down with paper towels and return them to the tank. Vacuum the gravel.

  3. Do a 50% water change everyday til it’s clear. Wipe down the glass. Remove plants and decor and wipe it down.

  4. That’s called a blackwater tank from all the tannins released from wood. Most bettas naturally live in tannin rich blackwater as it keeps ph and my lower where they like to be at as well as naturally softens water (again betta splendens preferred parameters).

If you hate the color activated carbon will take it out, but I’d keep your parameters where they are now so it’s stable. Doing weekly water changes with a buffer to keep pH neutral to low and water soft (my fav for my bettas is Seachem Neutral Regular that doubles as a conditioner & water softener) will keep everything stable and thriving. 🙂
