Is anybody able to please help me identify what’s going on with my betta?
Pictures attached. Progressed over 3 week period.
Started treating with melafix, as was what I had on hand to begin with. It continued getting bigger so I started with Wunder Tonic, and Salt.
It kept slowly progressing so I started with Methylene Blue, and Salt dips.
Been doing 20% water changes daily. Ammonia 0ppm, nitrates 0ppm, nitrates 10ppm- this has been consistent.
He had some tank mates disappear about a week before this began but I put this down to a power cut we had and a slight swing in ammonia and nitrates (this was under control within 24 hours)
Does anybody know what this might be and a suitable treatment for it? I’m located in New Zealand where we cannot access the likes of Kanaplex or Furan as its antibiotic products are controlled and no vets stock this. I have even tried an exotic vet at the other end of the country. The store I got him from have been super nice and tried to be helpful but even they have no idea what’s going on.
At the start I thought this was columnaris but now that it’s getting bigger it looks like just discoloured scales up close.
A Facebook group I posted in suggested not to be worried and that he may have the marble gene but after looking into this I don’t believe it looks like this

65L tank.
Yes a heater and filter.
Tank kept around 25 degrees C
Parameters- ammonia 0ppm, nitrites 0ppm, nitrates 10ppm, Ph 7
I feed Xtreme aquatic foods 1.5mm sinking pellets, brine shrimp, and he tends to steal the Hikari micro pellets from my rasporas
Driftwood and real plants in the tank
He’s also still a very hungry guy, hasn’t gone off his food at all
Is he just changing colour? If he’s eating, active and his fins look good, water parameters fine I would suspect this? I’ve never had a betta except wild types that look anything like the same fish in colour over time – I use photos to track the colour changes. Sadly due to excessive overbreeding I think all splendens may carry marbling now.
Are water changes done? That’s the only bit not said. Build up of minerals and everything that isn’t water is negated with regular water changes.
