How do you organize your tackle box and keep track of what fly is what?
How do you keep track of what flies are what – identifying size, type, etc? Do you just toss it all on there and hunt and peck? Or do you have a system of some sort?

Easy! I only have 6 flies and I just remember (I’m new- I realize eventually this won’t be the case anymore lol I’m following to see what the pros say)

I know my confidence flys. The rest are test pilots

I made a graph paper spreadsheet type deal that I use to keep track of sizes and patterns for each fly box.

I use the Fishpond Pescador in the back of my truck and arrange by drys, nymphs, etc.
And carry smaller boxes on my person while fishing.

i have 2 double sided boxes and one foam box. I organize it by box 1: nymphs, top water. box 2: terrestrials, streamers. foam box: salt water and buggers.
when I started tying my own flies I started limiting my collection to just like 12 flies. it’s easy to remember which fly immitates which bug at which stage. but I throw everything every time anyway lol. my guy at the fly shop, who I learn from, tells me the flies don’t work unless they’re wet

Small boxes of each water column section – nymph, emergers, drys, and one box for streamers

Different box for different kind of flies – dries and nymphs in one, streamers in another. Big drys in a 3rd.

I bought one of those giant euro nymph boxes with the leaf in the middle.
Flies are organized by wet dry, then bug type, then color/size.
However, I’m contemplating a reorg in which nymphs and drys are intermingled but it’s all by bug type/life cycle.
For example my zebra midges would be organized by size color, just below then the emergers by size and color, and then finally below them the griffith’s gnats
Might get tricky in the Mayfly section since there are so many but caddis should be straight forward and then terrestrials would have their own section.
Streamers get their own box

Box for dries, nymphs, and streamers. “Organized” by color – more or less. (It can get messy!)

I don’t… there are two types of fly fishermen…the fly collector and the fly user. I fish often and change flies a lot. I’ve largely given up on organizing my fly boxes. I keep my subsurface and dry flies in separate boxes.
