decided to test out a new rod and reel I got for next to nothing after I lined it up and it's great for trout and my smaller lures. caught the first one on powerbait and marshmallow for gf lunch tomorrow. let the rest go to grow. Any idea why the first pic one has a small tail?

Great fish. I use lures like that. If you’re releasing, I highly recommend changing those hooks to single instead of treble. It’s harder to set the hook sure, but at least the trouts mouth isn’t all mangled.
If I can make another recommendation? Get yourself a top water lure that mimics either a trout fry or a small fish. There’s nothing like watching a massive trout jump out of the water to hit it. Again, harder to actually catch anything, but when you do, it’s majestic.
