I found it was impossible to find an aquarium lid that was both to size and made of glass (i just want a pretty tank lid!) so decided to try and make my own.

Went to a local hardware shop to get custom glass cut to size, then used piano hinges to connect them and edge trim for the edges. Held up with a bunch of metal aquarium lid clips.

I also had the glass at the back of the tank be a smaller width since i needed space for the heater and pipes.

For the handle i ordered some clear acrylic handles that already had adhesive on one side so it would blend into the glass without visibly sticking out.

A lot of trial and error added to cost but the final build probably cost a little less than a hundred dollars to put together! I’m not a super handy person so just wanted to share.

How long have you have it? I tried to have a lid but my red root floaters did not like it. I keep mine half open, hoping they’ll propagate. I’ve heard they’re more resilient once established, but I’m curious

  2. Try to get at least a bit of airflow. If it’s too tight it can cause serious problems. 🙂

How much did everything cost you? Id do DIY stuff like this more if I had the tools to do it already and it was cheaper than buying something similar.
