Just set it up today and it’s my first time ever using a sponge filter. I normally use internal filters

Bro, you need water to go through the sponge so water get filtered. It’s is nowhere near enough. Not sure if you are joking or not 😅 So if you are serious and don’t trust yourself to ajust flow on the go when the betta is in the tank, you could put maximum setting on airpump and extend the outflow so it’s just above water (waterfall effect kill flow momentum). Either way, you NEED flow in your tank so there is no dead spot, but just not enough so the betta is getting tossed. It’s no lethal to the betta, it’s just exausting for them if they being toosed all the time (then exaustion can kill them over some time).

You need way more flow. Turn it up.
