I have a Marina S15 filter, is one of the thinest HOB filters in the market but uses darn cartridges. I hate throwing good bacteria so I modified mine by putting filter floss where the water enters the filter housing, sponges in the first baffle, more filter floss and a bag of crushed coral in the second and the 3rd baffle is all media bags. Tons of surface for bacteria to grow! Filter floss gets changed every couple of weeks but the sponges get rinsed.

Weirdly just this evening I was wondering if I should tweak my filter and if it was a thing people did. I haven’t had an aquarium for a long time – currently cycling a new tank – but when I DID have one I was young and I never really questioned or got curious about the hardware that I had.
