I can't get rid of this stringy hair algae at all and it's ruining my tank. I've tried water changes and anti hair algae treatment but I'm getting nowhere. It's getting worse and starting to kill off some of my plants. I'm planning on getting a group of amano shrimp to help eat some of the algae. Besides that, what else can I do? I can't pull it off without ripping off the leaves if my plants.

I’ve got the same problem. Trying my best to keep my husband’s tank going. He passed away 2 yrs ago and I have no idea what I’m doing. But the fish aren’t dead yet….lol
Try Seachem Excel
Just get snails or shrimp
Hi, I had the same problem, it’s commonly due to an excess of light and nutrients in the water. The best way to get rid of it is using seachem excel to increase available co2 in the tank for the plants (this will make it easier for them to convert the available nutrients to fuel and starve the algae), and do some water changes to reduce nutrients and then restrict the amount of time the tank is lit. I find Amano shrimp and snails tend to leave it alone, and if left untreated it will kill the plants. A clean up crew is essential though, so do get shrimp and snails, and Mollies are also algea eaters. I hope this helps, good luck!
I have this and about 100 shrimp and snails, they dont help much. But the thing i have found helps is taking out the plants and washing them in a bath of hydrogen peroxide for about 10-20 seconds then washing them off in clean water before putting it back in. Shrimp and snails will eat the dead alge. If it returns then do the same with your hardships (logs/branches decor) and retreat your plants.
I havent found it living in substrate as of yet, but it is such a PITA to deal with.
