I took a reel apart for the first time and after assembly the spool will not spin with the main driveshaft is spun. Seems like it has something to do with the main gear not getting power from the spin due to too much grease on the friction washers, but I rubbed the grease off and it still does this?

That’s how drag works. With the handle and star installed it pushes pressure on the drag stack allowing it to rotate the spool.
the big brass gear is not “connected” to anything, it is free floating the drag is what engages it when you retrieve. it’s like a clutch in a car
Does it do that when fully reassembled? Keep in mind that in its current state you have zero pressure on the drag whatsoever. Also, what happens when you turn the shaft in the correct direction?

If this gear isn’t seated properly on the main shaft then it will just spin with the drag washers and main gear.
