Hey all! New fisherman here. I just tried out my new rod for the first time and when I start to reel in after a cast, I can tell the line isn’t always wrapping tightly around the spool. Any ideas why and how to fix that? At one point I had a tiny birds nest and had to cut it.

You’re reeling in loose slack. Gently pinch the line as you reel it in to give it a little tension.
If i’m fishing weightless stuff, I’ll hold the line between my cigarette smoking fingers
