I'm going out for the frist time on a boat. I already have a few thing's like an ugly stick (please don't judge) a thin sweater, glasses and hat. We are going after black bass, fluke and porgy.
I need a life jacket for a 300 pound guy please let me know if anyone one has a good one in mind and if that stick is enough? It's a medium/heavy with 20 pound braided line. Can anyone just let me know what I'm missing or can add. Thank you

for life jackets, i’d check the local sports stores and try on anything from NRS. Make sure fit is good. me personally i like the chinooks for the pockets.
Hey man! First off, never worry about judgement here, everyone’s either here to help or to get advice/help, and experienced anglers love getting new fisherman into the sport. An ugly stick was my first rod, and I still love them up to this day. In fact, they are highly recommended for newer fisherman. Medium Heavy is also the correct rod for what you’re fishing. And also I think 20lb braid the right choice for what you’re fishing, I’d probably have gone with the same thing. No idea on life jackets but I’m sure you could grab one from bass pro or off amazon or something like that. Where are you fishing?
Did the charterboat tell you that you need a life jacket? Every one I’ve ever been on just has them.
Every charter I have been on you do not need to bring anything. They already have everything you will need except food and drink.
What kind of boat/charter? Is this one of those large boats bottom fishing with a couple dozen folks and you provide your own tackle?
Regardless – your first stop is to talk to the charter! They’ll have some good advice.
In general, I recommend heavier gear for dense group settings. It helps prevent fish from tangling a few neighboring lines during a fight. A MH rod and 20lb braid is fine for your targets. If you had options for 30 or 40lb braid, I would have recommended ot, but 20 is good.
You will want a variety of additions, including:
1) a cooler with ice for your catch. This could stay in your car if needed, but good for the drive home
2) terminal tackle (hi-lo rigs are a good likelihood). Having a small variety as well as a variety of weights will help you dial in a good setup based on that day’s conditions. The charter may have good advice
3) maybe bait? Depends on the charter.
4) drinks/snacks
5) extra cash on hand. If you desperately need something extra, being able to offer to buy extras from others on the charter can save the day
I fish long island sound all the time from party boats and charters. You are not going to fall off the boat unless you get super drunk and do something dumb. The life jackets are for when the boat starts sinking. Just keep your center of gravity behind the railing and you will be fine. Long island sound is pretty calm. There was only one trip I I sat out of fishing and enjoyed the ride because the water was too rough to keep botrom
Promise you bro no body on that boat would let you just drown anyone whos fishing sees a man go over board everyone’s ganna be on saving private ryan mode.
Charter boats provide gear…they don’t want to be responsible if yours gets broken, plus it will be high quality gear. They are required to have floatation devices for all passengers as well.
All you ha e to do is show up with a license, and tip after youre done for all of their hard work.
