Unfortunately my little rescue betta did not make it.. 😢

I was cleaning my sisters room and found a betta living in a horrible bowl (in the picture) it had barely any water in it and the water was like a greenish brown colour and it had the worst smell I have ever smelled. I payed my sister for it and gave her a real home.
I had a little planted 1.5 gallon that had a light and filter (and I added a heater) and it has a Little Rock and drift wood- I was originally gonna use it for shrimps or snails but she was desperate (for some context I’m really not rich so I couldn’t afford a whole new setup for her at the moment) the tank was already cycled and I was gonna go buy something for it within that week or so but she rly needed it.
The first couple of days she wouldn’t eat (I tried pellets, frozen food, and live food) but after the 2nd day of not eating she ate 1 pellet and that’s all it took for me to go into “mom mode” and I did everything I could to try to save her- I did salt baths, I cleaned her tank often since it was only 1.5 gallons and for a while it seemed to go uphill (she got a bit of colour back, she was a bit more active and she stated to remember me and would greet me at the glass 😊)
I don’t rly know what happened but she started to get worse every day- I fasted her and tried a whole bunch of things but I’m pretty sure whatever she had before came back and in the end she passes away.

I’m so happy she got to live out her last month or so having a name (Nebula) a clean tank and lots of love

I’m so sad bc I had some pictures of her and now they are all gone- idk what happened it’s just like they don’t exist anymore
But we have Nebula a nice resting spot in an aloe vera plant and I hope she swims freely in fishy heaven ❤️

The tank is now open for more rescues- I am still working towards getting more tanks (I have contacted a few ppl and I’m waiting for responses but I’ll keep yal updated)

The tank’s cycle probably crashed or got overloaded with ammonia because it’s 1.5g. Smaller tanks are much harder to maintain consitent parameters. I suggest getting at least a 5g for recovery/hospital tanks. I also suggest maybe holding off on trying to rescue since you’re still a beginner..

Sometimes I feel like people go overboard and end up stressing a fish. I personally go for small improvements over time. When I’ve picked up bettas from similar situations I’m careful with changing the water. They can go into shock from simply changing out the habitat quickly. I actually add clean water to the old nasty water. I slowly transition to a fully clean tank. That’s what I also do with any topicals being are giving away.

The fish probably got used to the bad conditions somewhat, only to be placed in new conditions that probably weren’t much better and caused additional stress.

i mean a tank dosnt need to be a tank, my hospital “tank” is a 5g bucket from home depot. maybe that will work better for a temp solution if something like this happens again
