Been wanting to try out the flipping technique, and to my surprise this is the one fish I caught. A chunky bluegill. This little guy managed to get caught on a 4/0 EWG hook! I missed a few other bites in the same area that I now assume were other bluegill.

I did enjoy trying out flipping. There are areas of thick vegetation that I would never have even considered fishing and are now accessible. I used a 7’ heavy power Aird-X rod. It’s a bit soft for a heavy power rod, but it’ll serve for now. If I really enjoy the technique I might consider upgrading to a true flipping rod down the road. The lure I was using was a 3.5” missile craw from Missile Baits.

  1. I got one a lot smaller than that today on a popper that was about the same size as the fish.

I would occasionally catch some overhungry rock bass when fishing for LM bass with a 4” craw lol, it happens.. all fish are opportunistic to some degree

Not bluegill. Doesn’t have any of the features. Goggle eye or war mouth. In the south they are sometimes referred to as rock bass, though they aren’t true rock bass.

Had a slight birds nest from hitting a branch during my cast the other week when throwing a mid size rage bug on a 2/0 hook along the banks. Picked it out, pulled in the lure and there was a small bluegill hooked on the damn thing.

That looks more like a redbreast than a bluegill, or maybe a hybridized green-redbreast? It does have a big mouth like a green.

  6. I appreciate everyone who pointed out that this is actually a warmouth, not a bluegill. Warmouth is not a species I knew anything about before posting this so I’m glad I did. Always cool to learn something new!
