Through the years in conventional fishing the lures just kept getting more expensive. My first week of fly fishing I noticed immediately one fly costs an average $2.80 compared to $8-$12 for just one name brand lure.
I picked these up from my local Walmart for $12 Total. Ant/Bee/Stonefly and three cork poppers.(I'm not sure what the poppers are trying to mimic)
**I also found out if I switched my Google maps graphics from satellite to terrain, it shows All the bodies of water in my are even little creeks near my house that's walkable. So I'm planning on doing some creekside fly fishing for this Memorial Day weekend. Wish me luck.😁🤙**

The first time I’ve ever heard of someone going into fly fishing and saving money.
You should start tying your own, that’s where the real savings are /s
Lol thought this was the circlejerk sub for a second
Wait, is this real? Are you saying that you think fly fishing is cheaper than gear fishing?
Why don’t you step into my office and let’s talk about this bridge I got for sale. 🤣
Seriously though I’m glad you’re finding fly fishing to be enjoyable and cost-effective for you. Flies are not the worst expense. Everything else is. And Lord, help you if you start getting into things like streamer fishing and don’t tie your own.
You think that, but one day you realize you have hundreds of flys. Infinity more flys than lures. Simply because of size. Your lures start getting tangled and tackle boxes get full and you run out of space. With flys, you could misplace a box the size of a deck of cards and lose 500 bucks in tungsten beached nymphs.
I also break off roughly 100 times more often with my fly rod than my baitcasters. The bank bush monster gets way more of my fly than my lures.
The fly fishing industry’s goal it making feeding the trees a little more economical.
Nobody tell this man about trees and submerged sticks; leave him to his naïve ignorance as long as possible
This is exactly how I explain it to my wife.
The difference is that the $8 name brand crankbait will catch 100 fish and still be going strong. Maybe the paint will chip a little, but it’ll still be fully functional.
Your $2.80 fly will start falling apart after the first dozen fish.
Edit to add – that foam spider will hold up well. They’re very durable. The Betts poppers tend to start losing feathers after a few bass or bluegill nail them, though. A tiny dab of superglue on the thread can help, if you’re very careful not to mess up the feathers and hackles. But overall, they’re just more fragile than lures.
Those poppers don’t last long. The cork crumbles fairly quickly.
Actually, those would work well for bluegills. And a bluegill on a fly rod is helluva good fight.
These things will absolutely slay the bluegill and smaller bass in the summer. Damn near every single cast sometimes. Enjoy, they’re a lot of fun.
I love the pun!
Wait until you find estate sales. You can buy a whole notebook of old flies and rods and reels and every sort of anything.
