Probably a mutation but i’d imagine his ability to find food is increased so it could be the start of adaptation.

Generally adaptations start as accidental mutations. The mutation happens to be beneficial which allows that organism to live longer and reproduce more. If the mutation is genetic then the offspring have a chance to get the mutation and the advantage as well.
That’s to say, organisms don’t really intentionally adapt. There’s nothing in the catfish that says “ill sprout an extra whisker to be more likely to live”

Damn, looks like stick-bed whiskers, evolution at play for sure!

Isn’t evolution just mutations that benefit the species?

All evolutionary adaptations are accidental genetic mutations. More whiskers means more sensory sensitivity, so could very well be a sign of evolution at work. Let’s check back in like 50,000 years!
