Anyone know what this is? I was fishing for bass (swim jig) and this thing absolutely smoked it.

Caught in a marina that feeds into Lake Erie.

I have never seen of these before.

Had teeth and a large spot on its tail.

Thanks !

looks like a bowfin to me! the teal color fins and teeth are a giveaway. also called a dogfish!

It’s a bowfin, considered a trash fish by many (they also get confused with invasive snakehead)

They are a native and ancient species important to the ecosystem with fossils of them being found from the Jurassic period. Very cool catch

  3. Mudfish (aka Bowfin). I hate catching them. They destroyed (3) Jackhammers on me one morning.

Bowfin dogfish shoepeg. Tough as nails with a inclination towards bass lures

  5. People talk about bowfin like they are trash but they are a native fish and they fight super hard. I’d rather catch a bowfin than get skunked any day.

The spot and green fins mean it’s a male putting his best fin forward to attract a female!
