Is the shakspere bass fishing kit good if i want to just fish at local lakes/ponds?

went fishing last week with this and someone told me the stuff in this kit was too big to catch anything. honestly just wanted to catch bass and carpe. i used a smaller hook i had from before with a worm and bobber and did get some bites but im wondering if i should ditch this kit.
