Or even if I took all of them and put new ones in my old tank?

It would kick start your tank

Yes.

If you’re going to jumpstart a new tank, take half the tank (water gravel, filters) and move to a new one. It’ll be much closer to a larger water change than a new tank cycle. Used to run extra sponge filters in old tanks for this purpose. It may not be perfect, but it’s way better than starting new.

Condition several in your tank so when you need to set up a new tank, media is ready
DocMcCracken on
Yes it would. If starting a new tank you can change media, just run nee media in an existing tanks for a few weeks. Take some of the sponges and squeeze the muck out in new tanks. Use some of the gravel in the new tank.
Just be aware it will jump start some bacteria, but you need to gently build up bb load.

Yes, remember all your substrate, hardscape, decorations in your original tank also have beneficial bacteria living on it, so you won’t be hurting your first tank to borrow some media from it.
SnowyFlowerpower on
Yes, but you should also ghost feed because the bacteria needs something to eat, else its gonna starve

it would still take longer to properly cycle the tank then you are hoping for

Honestly, take the bio balls, fill your aquarium, start the filter, then dunk them in the main tank and shake the bag. That will seed your new aquarium.
PickleMundane6514 on
Yes but make sure water is flowing through it. Put it in or at least near the filter.
SomeBlueDevil on
It will help but how much depends on the size of your tank and the bioload you’re planning on adding.
Unless it’s a small tank I would supplement with additional biomedia.
digitaltransmutation on
Is that a breed box? You need water flowing over those bag boys.
Philosophile42 on
That’s a pretty small bag of media. So it all depends on the size of your tank you’re seeding. If you can take half the gravel that would be better.
naedisgood on
Yes just make sure the new tank has ammonia in already and continous supply of it.

I just do a filter swap. The tank will seed the filter and the filter will seed the other tank.
