Picked up this Abu Garcia Cardinal DM8 “Big Water”, Made in Japan, and I’m trying to find some solid information on it — particularly rarity, history and value.
From the research we’ve done, it appears to be part of the vintage Cardinal Dragmaster/8-series of Japanese-made spinning reels from the late 1980s, featuring the unusual rear-drag/preset drag system.
This one is marked:
• Cardinal DM8
• Big Water
• Made in Japan
• 87-1 / 88-89
From what we’ve been able to determine, the 88-89 marking appears to correspond to the production period, which would put it around 1988–89.
Mechanically it seems very good — spins smoothly, drag is working properly, and everything appears to function as it should.
We’ve done quite a bit of searching but information on the DM8 specifically is surprisingly scarce. We’ve found a few references confirming the model and another DM8 described as a “Big Water” reel, but very little regarding production numbers, how uncommon they actually are, or reliable sold values.
Does anyone here collect these or know more about the DM8 Big Water specifically?
Would love to know how often they turn up, whether they’re considered particularly rare/collectible, and what a realistic value might be.
Any catalogue scans, old advertisements, sales records or other information would be greatly appreciated.

eBay has similar reels at around $50. Try translating your normal search queries to Japanese and search again. You might be able to find more info.
