What’s wrong with this bass?

Caught this guy in a small pond, not deep at all. His eyes are poking out so much.

    Exopthalmia. It is commonly caused by high levels of gas (like nitrogen) in the blood but can also be caused by systemic infection. In this case, I would guess that it’s due to infection since your pond is shallow. Typically you see this when a fish is brought up too fast from deep water and nitrogen gas releases from the blood too quickly and forms bubbles

    My friends dad built a huge fish tank for their backyard, we would catch fish and put them in there, a lot of them would get this, it was tough to watch. I never really knew what caused it.

    I work in a lab that pond is stagnant or the water level is too low so the water has a buildup/concentration of nutrients (usually nitrogen). This excess nitrogen causes health issues in basically any organism. Theres probably a ton of decaying organic matter in the water too.

    That fish is probably suffering organ failure and fluid build up because its kidneys cant filter out the excess nutrients. They’re poisoning it.

    That really high nutrient level usually results in abnormally high levels of bacteria in the water too.
