Lost a Good One Today


Hey y’all, I’m a relatively new fisherman and had what felt like a pretty solid fish on for the first time today. I was able to record with my metas after setting the hook. In hindsight I can definitely see my drag was set too loose. Any other advice on something I could have done differently? This creek is known for small mouth. I know they fight like hell but I feel like I lost a monster. 😂

    Drag is your friend. Let big fish wear themselves out and be patient. Don’t over tighten your drag.

    You gotta let em tucker themselves out. You’re doing way too much reeling. It’s less like a fight and more like a dance. Gotta little bit too much dip on your chip my boy.

    Also as a new fisherman when you lose a fish, check the end of the line. If its a clean break the line snapped. If there’s a little curly bit of line at the end your knot failed.

    Ive only caught one fish that took drag on my medium power rod. It got my adrenaline going so high that i was shaking too badly to get the hook out once i caught it. So i dont blame you for being a bit flustered here. I think your drag was probably fine, especially after tightening it the first time. As others said, just dont reel when its running

    Here’s some small but important technique adjustments I’d suggest. First off, don’t reel against drag, that puts twists in the line, thereby weakening it.

    Secondly, when you get a big fish, learn to lift your tip up, then reel on the way back down. Repeat that motion over and over and you’ll eventually land the fish.

    Pull up to the 11:00 position to bring the fish toward you, and then reel as you bring your tip back down. Then lift up and pull it in, then reel in as you bring the tip back down. Yo-yo like this when bringing in a big fish. Reeling against the drag just causes insane line twist. If it wants to take drag, let it.

    Don’t ever reel when a fish is peeling drag. When the reel is screaming like that when you are reeling in, you really aren’t gaining any line anyway, and it’s twisting the line making it weaker. Let the rod and the drag do the work. Tire that fish out before you bring it in. A tired fish is much easier to control and easier to net/land when you get it close. It takes some practice and patience, but you’ll get there.

    I’ve farmed a few fish in my time. I’m sure everyone has, like people have said relax. It’s not a race. Enjoy your time in nature. Worst day fishing is better than the best day working

    Don’t real against the drag. If they’re pulling line, let them. Then pull your rod tip up and away from the water and reel while moving the rod back down towards the water. I honestly don’t think this was even a fish. You were reeling so much that you can’t really tell if something is pulling or not. You have to stop reeling and see if you actually feel a fish.Based on the fact that your rod tip isn’t moving much, I’m pretty confident you were just trying to drag in a limb or other debris.

    Edit: after watching again, I’d bet a lot of money that wasn’t a fish and I don’t think you ever actually reeled any line in at all. That noise means line is being pulled off the reel, or in your case, you’re constantly reeling but no line is being put back on the spool.
