Hey, I just got my first betta yesterday. When i bought him he was laying on his side at the surface not really moving at all.

I acclimated him into the tank for about an hour, I’ve had the tank cycling with live plants for 4 weeks, checked the parameters and it was all good to go.

Hes a lot more active than since I got him, eating fine and keeps nibbling on the duckweed but he’s just not swimming down at all. I don’t believe there’s a current stopping him, he just kinda floats up when he has tried to swim down. It’s only been a day since I got him.

Is this normal settling into the tank or should I be worried?

Thank you!

  1. He’ll become more explorative once he gets comfortable. Bettas naturally live at the top of water bodies since they have a labyrinth organ. He’ll be okay.
He does look like he may have fin rot though.

  2. That’s normal, bettas mostly stays on the upper water, you should add a hammock or leaves to let him rest.
