Meet my latest reel mod:

KYOGA100SHL改10.0SVS∞TW
— a Daiwa × Shimano hybrid with a 10.0:1 gear ratio.

The biggest feature? I fitted Daiwa’s T-Wing System (TWS) to a round baitcasting reel, a configuration not offered as a factory setup on Daiwa’s round reels.
But I didn’t stop there. I also integrated Shimano’s SVS Infinity centrifugal braking system, bringing together technologies from two rival manufacturers in one reel.
The build combines:
Daiwa round-reel frame
Daiwa T-Wing System
Shimano SVS Infinity centrifugal brake
10.0:1 gear ratio
Final weight: 256 g (9.0 oz)
Getting the SVS Infinity system to fit and function properly was one of the main engineering challenges. I used a Ray’s Studio spool for the 2020 Shimano Metanium and modified the brake unit’s mounting position to make the system work, without modifying the spool shaft hole itself.
Is it necessary? Not really.
Is it practical? Time will tell.
Was it a fun engineering challenge? Absolutely.
I build these things because I love mechanical design and experimentation. There’s no commercial goal here — I just wanted to see if I could make this unusual combination work.
I call it KYOGA (狂牙), a play on the original Japanese name.
What do you think of this round-reel Daiwa × Shimano hybrid?

  1. This is so sweet. I’ve been wanting to increase the gear ratio of an older Calcutta 400B. Any chance you can point me in a direction? Are the gears for 7:1 or 8:1 available? If so, where?

  2. I don’t see how this was possible, but you have pictures and video… Impressive work. Let us know how it functions on the water
