I have a 29 gallon tank with:

  • 1 New Female Betta Koi
  • 10 Pygmy Corys
  • 12 Ember Tetras
  • A handful of Neocaridina

I’m not new to fishkeeping, but I am new to owning a Betta. I’m not entirely sure what to look for in them other than fin damage, which is why I chose the stocking I have and a Betta with shorter fins.

I picked her up from a box store and looked like the most active and healthy out of the ones in their cups. I wish I could take them all. 🙁

In my opinion she looks healthy: no fin damage, she's curious, and definitely a Dora the Explorer. I guess my main concern is if she is overweight or at a good weight, and if there is anything else that stands out.

Rebekah is my first Betta so any helpful things I can do with the tank, her, or what to look out for, that any of you have experienced and isn't common knowledge/searchable would be amazing!

P.S. she also hates dehydrated blood worms. Maybe frozen?

She looks healthy to me, maybe a little overweight, but that’s easier to tell with a picture from above.

General recommendation is to avoid bloodworms; they’re not very nutritious and can contribute to her getting too chunky. Fluval bug bites and frozen daphnia are good choices

  2. Beautiful betta! I never really had a female betta before but looking at others she seems to be at a perfect weight! Me personally, I always give my betta a day to fast or two to help him digest to prevent swimbladder. A suggestion for food is fluval bug bites betta formula, the pellets are a perfect size in my opinion. Just be aware they do sink fast haha. A thing to look out for is dropsy, which is when the scales pinecone and causes other things like organ failure, etc. But don’t be to nervous about it, its mostly caused by poor environments. Ur tank looks absolutely gorgeous! Hope this helps, ask me questions if needed.
