I bought an ordinary filter for my 40 gallon (I own a juvenile bichir) and it is super loud and uproots the sand and plants in the tank. I tried raising the water level but it doesn’t work. Is there a better alternative?

That entirely depends on what you want to spend.
I personally bought the aqua clear AC20 for my 20 gallon tank it’s not exactly cheap anywhere form 60-150 cad depending on your tank size. But it is however a great 4 stage filter with adjustable water flow and is very very quiet
AquaClear brands, HOB, Penn Plax canister, also different HOB, Canister types, if you really a ho getter, there’s always making a 10gallon aquarium into a sump.
Highly recommend a fluval ac50. I run one on a 20H and my waters always been crystal clear. (ik it’s oversized but it was 60% off being a scratch n dent so i had to get it)
