Multiple rods is only OK in places where there aren’t lots of people trying to fish. Secondly just go and find another dock.

I would not even want to fish there lol

Personally, I like fishing for the relaxation and solitude, this would stress me out but to each their own I guess

  3. Seems like poor etiquette, though it may still be legal depending on your area. I’d be packing up and moving to another spot personally, I fish to enjoy some peace and quiet and maybe put dinner on the table, not to be surrounded with people.

  4. I am from California, and am new to fishing, found this pier and wanted to try it out

  5. Running multiple rods seems selfish to me but if these are regulars and they all kind of know each other, there might be some unwritten rules to getting a spot. If you want to fish, it might be worth introducing yourself and asking.

  6. This is at the end of a pier. I don’t know if this is the case but there is a type of “game fishing” from piers. It’s called a “trolley” rig in some places or a “king rig”. A larger rod “anchor rod”with a weighted anchor is cast out and used like an outrigger on a boat. A second rod “fighting rod” has the bait on it and the line is attached to a quick release “trolley”. Game fish takes the bait and it releases from the anchor line. It’s been used for decades on the ends of piers all up and down the east coast. Some piers don’t allow it, some do. So piers have a rod limit, some don’t. Depends on the piers rules and the old first come first served rule.

I count around 30 rods (looks like 4ish aren’t in use) and up to 9 fisherman.

The internet says public piers in California are no more than 2 rods per person. So ya probably illegally fishing. Hard to say without seeing how many lines are in the water though. They might just be taking up space which is a little rude but not illegal.

This is because CA doesn’t require a license to fish from piers. I never fish piers because they are crowded and fished out. We call these folks the bucket brigade, they keep *everything” and throw it in a 5 gallon to take home.

Are there rod holders on water side of the railing because a bunch of those look oddly placed

Bruh, take two rods, leave one in the car as a backup, it’s saltwater fishing anyways, you need heavy and heavier, you don’t need like 20 gazillion finesse setups like bass anglers.

  11. Time to invest in a kayak and fish away from the pier. Personally it’s more relaxing and better fishing experience away from the crowds.

  12. Just show up earlier. Bring 4 rods and a couple coolers and chairs. Pier fishing is a different animal lol.

  13. I like pier fishing when its 1 guy 1 rod, it gets really fucking annoying trying to manage not crossing another person’s lines when they have 5 of them out stretched down the pier and you dont know what’s where.

There should be a maximum amount of rods allowed per person Id see what that is where youre at.

Thats too many, finding a new spot will pay dividends.

Personally, I’d probably go and say hi and see whats up and look for somewhere quieter to fish

  15. I hate the local pier rats that do this. There’s a rule against this but it gets ignored because the pier is no longer staffed.

It’s why I am glad I have a kayak and can throw 100+ yards off the beach, so I can avoid this nonsense.

Aside from the fact that hardly anybody there is going to catch anything because the place is so crowded with lines for how few fish are probably there, this is not the environment I want to spend my time in. I’d rather sit on a bank a few hundred yards (or a few miles) from the nearest human aside from my girlfriend.

  17. as someone from the Bay, please lmk what pier this is so that I can always avoid this. This is worse than Torpedo Pier, is this the one at Oyster Point?

  18. Miserable – I actually only like fishing if I’m all by my lonesome or with my family friends. If there are people within a hundred feet I go somewhere else

on those days I just move locations, I have seen people spend hours in scenarios like this and catch nothing

Pull out your Barbie pole and cast into their lines. Feign innocence when it all goes to shit.

  21. My take is that it’s a public area and I’ll fish there if I like…. I don’t like to so this isn’t an issue for me.
