First pic from a 1995 book on Betta husbandry. Things have changed massively since then, and I was reflecting on a tiny, sickly female I purchased around 1998 that was this color because she was the only one of that color I could find. She didn’t live long.
And I was thinking about how Abby (second pic) was developing similar colors but not quite, when I realized in all my pets tore visits and all my time on this sub, I haven’t seen one. Did we stop breeding this for quality? Is this stress colors and now that we care for them better they don’t display them anymore?

I wouldn’t say they’re exactly the same but this is the closest one I can find. It’s from a LFS near me.

Given the timeframe, the base color and fin shape would be Cambodian veiltail. That degree of cellophane on the fins may have been selected for.
