Trigger warning: photo of the fish I brought home in a not very happy cup. Before you yell at me, I struggled with this and probably made the wrong choice. I went to petco today on my walk in Wilmington NC and the beta cups were the worst I’ve ever seen. I complained to the manager after taking a video and told her I was reporting them to the humane society. I left with this little girl and hope she makes it. Is there any recourse? Will the humane society even listen? The manager was super rude and looked at this cup saying “can you show me what you mean?” I said “ well, there are multiple dead ones and they all need water changes. It’s the worst I’ve ever seen and I’ll be back next week to make sure you fixed it”

Besides what other people say, imo it is never bad to save a suffering animal. Of course they will breed new ones but this fish will probably heal and have a good life with you. And for your question: I feel like noone is doing shit. There are so many pet shops who let their animals suffer and don’t take care of them. You can try tho.

  2. Former Petco manager here.

The employees have zero say in how things are ran and the stores are short staffed, often not given enough payroll to give staff full hours, and they really do not make enough money to get harassed by people. It was always a struggle to get the cups cleaned out because staff get pulled in 5 different directions. I can guarantee the Humane Society isnt going to care about fish anymore than Petco corporate does. You can try calling the corporate number and they might send someone out, they might not.

All you’re accomplishing is being a pain to the staff. You still bought the fish.

  3. this looks like a PetSmart cup. if you used your phone number at checkout, you will be able to take a customer satisfaction survey (either sent to your email or on your receipt). you can totally tear them apart on there and this store will hopefully get in trouble by their district leader.

  4. don’t complain to the store workers, they have basically 0 say in what the company does. send an email to petco directly and bring it up. you’re just antagonising an innocent worker

  5. “I’m reporting you! But here’s some money for the thing I’m reporting, so you are encouraged to keep doing it.”

Money talks, and harassing hourly employees doesn’t do anything.

  6. Dont buy them.

With no demand the supply will dry up.

This practice exists purely because people buy them. Buying one isnt rescuing either, it just frees up space for another.

Don’t listen to all these comments thank you for rescuing this lil fish. You can also report it to ASPCA and the Betta World For Bettas.

Report it to PETA. They are mounting info for an action forum and this may be useful
