While I was acclimating fish in this tank, I accidentally filled the jar the fish were in with too much water and it sank and knocked the bottom glass of the tank, causing this. I kid you not this all happened within an hour of purchasing the tank. I have lots of aquarium silicone and was wondering if I could save this by putting lots of silicone on the cracks. I also have a large roll of laminating plastic sheet for hard photos. Can I use that as a patch? Please let me know, thanks!

  1. Luckily you just bought the tank. Return it and get another. That one will do you no good.

  2. You need a new piece of glass and to dismantle the whole thing, rebuild it, if you want to make it usable.

It’s new, so just tell the seller you found it that way when you opened the box and have them replace it for free.

I guess it’s not totally impossible to fix it, but you’d never sleep again out of anxiety that it could crack again. Not worth it.

You have two options: 1) fix the tank with 10 $ of silicone or 2) fix your floor with a >1000 $ bill for a cleaning crew

Sorry, can I just clarify a few things? You say you were acclimating your fish, did you literally just buy the tank and the fish for it? It’s best to have the tank setup for a good few weeks before adding fish. It’s also good to use a plastic bag or plastic tub to acclimate in, definitely don’t be farting around with glass jars in a glass tank (but you’ve probably already learned that lesson 😅). Definitely no hate, but if you’re new then it might be good to hang around on this sub for a bit and ask questions before adding fish if you can 😊
