Flounder has some damage on his fins and I’m not sure what the cause is or how best to help him. 8 days ago I changed his tank from a 20g tall to a 13.3g shallow. I transferred all the gravel, driftwood, rocks, and plants from his old tank to the new one. I also transferred the filter media to a new smaller filter because the old one was blowing him all around the new tank.

3 days ago I checked on him in the morning and he had some fin damage. I added an Indian Almond Leaf. Yesterday I thought it was a bit worse but wasn’t certain, and today it’s definitely worse. There’s nothing in the tank he could tear his fins on, and it’s all the same decor as his old tank (except I added a few new anubias and one new rock to create a tunnel).

Tank:

Size: 13.3 gallons

Substrate: Fluval Stratum

Hardscape: driftwood & zebra rock (no sharp edges)

Plants: java ferns, various anubias, amazon swords

Other: Fake floating log & clear tunnel (no sharp edges), airline tubing to corral floating plants

Parameters: pH 6.8, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 10

If he’s biting his fins, why would he do that? Is there anything I can do to help him stop? And should I do anything other than adding IAL to help him heal?

  1. Try adding some stress coat into the tank, it has aloe in it that research shows helps heal wounds more quickly. Someone once posted a link to the research paper on bettas here but I didn’t save it unfortunately, but I added Stress Coat to one of my tanks when mine tore his fins in two places after scratching them on a new tunnel that I got from Amazon. I took the offending decor out and he’s healing grey now.
