It’s got a latch on the side for casting the line, but it doesn’t do so when I flip it.

  1. That’s a conventional reel, and a dated one at that. Casting with that reel will be challenging – for one, overhand reels like that are harder to control (you’ll get backlash). Second, there’s a very high chance that the bearings are shot, and would make it virtually impossible.

If you’re a beginner, and casting, you want a spinning reel. You’ll get more distance, fewer problems, etc

To cast that guy, you need to invest energy in rotating the spool. That cuts down casting distance. In order for the spool to spin freely, it needs good bearings. In contrast, a spinning reel spool doesn’t need to turn during the cast- bad bearings won’t negatively impact distance.

It’s not designed to cast, that’s pens senator 113 if I’m not mistaken. This is a conventional set typically used for bottom fishing

This is an older boat/pier rod setup, ment to just drop down over the side, while you could prob cast it a bit with a considerably heavy sinker, its not really ment for that and requires some skill not to backlash.i would invest in a spinning setup to start, but if you want to stay with the baitcaster style reel grab a new regular one,not a conventional like this one.
