I made a post about this place a while ago and decided to fish it today. I ended up going from 12:00-15:00 and only caught 1 tiny bass. I eventually gave up on bass and just tried targeting anything that would bite.

The red circles are where I fished from, and the yellow lines in the 2nd photo were the directions of my casts.

I started off at the bench next to the drainage pipe, throwing out a short square bill crankbait with a slow steady retrieve.

I didn't catch anything after ~15 minutes, so I switched to a wacky rigged green senko.

I didn't catch anything after ~20 minutes, so I switched to a spinnerbait with a steady retrieve.

I didn't catch anything, so I moved to the drainage pipe and started dropping wacky rigs right in front of it, where I got my first bite.

I kept dropping there but couldnt get anymore, so I moved to the other side behind the fountain in photo 1.

One of the main issues I had was I couldn't tell if I was getting bites, snags, or just the bait itself. I'm not used to using heavy baits like spinnerbaits and crankbaits, so I sometimes reeled in too fast. I got snagged a lot, and got my lures covered in weeds a few times.

I got my only fish on a white jighead with a chartreuse curly tail grub. It was tiny, probably less than a pound. After that I kept trying with the grub and didnt get anything.

I moved to the far right spots, and threw the grub and a texas rig, but didnt get anything for the rest of the day.

As for my rods, I only have these 2. I know they are cheap and bad, but they are all I have.

Rod #1

  • Spinnerbait
  • Crankbait
  • Texas Rig

Rod #2

  • Wacky Rigs
  • Jighead w/ Curly Tailed Grub

  1. pregnantdads on

boy i slammed 3 decent bass on my lunch hour today using a texas rigged zoom trick worm in green pumpkin. it was a warm one, but nice and cloudy i could see the bass striking the surface all over.

i also use red hooks now since i was given the advice by a more experienced angler that i work with. he said the red looks like a bloodline on the worm

  2. Maybe the fish were just fishin, but if there’s any advice I can offer from what you provided, consider the effect that small changes in weight can make for you. You mentioned getting snagged often.

I really like jig heads and swim baits. And I have a range of jigs in various weights and hooks. Same w length of bait. Let’s say I’m throwing that on a 3/16 and getting snagged every other cast. Size down to an 1/8. Now you are positioned better for this presentation, less likely to break off, and won’t pick up junk that may make your presentation less appealing.

Water could be a bit cold, but of course I couldn’t know that for certain. I’m in VT, where things are just starting to shake up for bass, so up until now, it’s just been very cold to catch a bass from a bank.

  3. Don’t beat yourself up over it, a pond that small may not even have that many fish in it. And sometimes fish are weird and just don’t bite. Keep fishing it! You’ll learn how the heavy baits feel and adjust to it. I don’t think you really did anything wrong other than what you are already aware of (possibly reeling too fast).

  4. Like someone else said, sometimes the fishing is tough. Only other thing I might have tried is slowing down a bit. Dropshots can be extremely effective in situations where you want to slow down but there’s pond muck on the bottom.
