As a broke college student I’ve had a 5 gal tank for a year now, but I’ve finally been able to get a 10 gallon. My dorm next year will be bigger so I’ll finally have the space, and I had to take apart my 5 gallon anyways to get home so thought I’d save my fish the stress of having to do that a second time and purchase the 10 gal and move him directly into there. Unfortunately I’m still coping with a cycle crash, but that gives me an opportunity to put him into the new 10 gal right away since the poor fish will have to deal with a fish-in cycle either way. I’m transferring everything from the the 5 gal to the new tank to keep the bacteria, and instead of getting a 10 gal filter I’m getting a second 5 gal filter to keep the bacteria in the original one, and I’ve heard it makes for more even tank filtration.
I’ve began the setup to map my vision for what I want. I’m affectionately dubbing this the “trash kingdom.” I’m not willing to spend a bajillion dollars on pet store decor that’s often unsafe, so I went to to this junkyard on my farm and found this cool jug. Broke for a wider opening for Blue to get in and out of, I’ll be sanding down all the edges then gluing moss to them to make it safe, boiling it, and sealing off the original opening, either with moss hot glue or plants- would be a cool place to put some anubias lol. There’s some sea glass scattered about for a little color
I’ve disliked the substrate I’ve had because it clouds up the water when it’s stirred and coats all the plants in dust. Most of the bacteria is in substrate though so I won’t get rid of it. I’m gonna top it off with sand+ use that to build up the back of the tank, then as always idiot proof everything with moss. I’ll either buy or make a betta hammock or two since this is a deeper tank than before.
Props to you if you read this whole yap- I’m just really excited about this lol. Advice and criticism is welcome
Edit: I have plants don’t worry, their just not in this photo, but rest assured I have a huge java fern, 2-3 anubias(can’t remember the number right now) wisteria, and some other fern like plants who’s name I cant remember

Though not to my tastes (not a fan of the human trash the planet look) I will say make sure it’s safe for fish. The holes look like potential places to get stuck and there is a lot that could dislodge, move or trap a fish.

Please seal off and be absolutely sure it’s all safe before adding Blue. Plants, please add plants.

  2. My advice is to seal off the bottles (fill them Ofcourse) as they will be dirt magnet and hell to clean just my 2cent

You need plants, friend. They’re not harder, they’re easier. They make keeping your water parameters steady so much easier, they give the fish enrichment and natural hides.

If a fish was forced to live in a trash dump? Is that what you’re going for?

I let my friend take the lead on my tank because I was so nervous to mess anything up – y’all don’t even know how excited I am for a renovation 🤣
