Spent a decent bit out on this river today and caught absolutely zero fish. Initially started by throwing inline spinners upstream, but it was impossible to get the lure to spin at all due to the current and it wasn’t until it got downstream where it had any action. Decided to switch to flies with a bubble float, and that too didn’t produce anything. Had a red wire worm about 1’ beneath a bubble float that I cast upstream and let it float downstream, nothing. Swapped to a nymph fly later and still the exact same result.
What am I doing wrong? I initially thought maybe it’s because I’m not fly fishing, but I see people catch Trout all the time on spin-gear.

If I’m casting a lure here, I’d go panther martin. Black and gold tends to be the colors all trout love.
Cast out, and back so as you retrieve the line your lure will swing across and back to you. If it’s not working try moving up or down river.
If the water is below 50°F trout will be low in the water column and you’ll want to retrieve the line slower so the lure sinks lower.
And, sadly. Some days fish just don’t want to play.
We’re all bad at fishing. Some just get lucky more often than others.
You should learn to fly fish, its easier than most people realize and your catch rates for trout will improve.
Too shallow, get a pair of waders or even hip boots will suffice to get out to deeper water.
