So I mostly fish tenkara and never really got into “proper” fly fishing setups before.
A friend’s grandfather apparently used to fly fish a lot but says he’s too old for it now, so he handed these over to me and basically said: “You should finally try real fly fishing.” 😅
The setups are:
Guideline Stoked 8’6 #4
Guideline Embrace 9’ #5
Guideline Embrace 9’ #9 Pike
I honestly have almost no experience with western fly fishing gear.
What kind of situations would you personally use each rod for? Anything I should expect coming from tenkara? And did I accidentally get a genuinely good starter lineup or am I about to discover expensive suffering?

The 4# and 5# rods would be used for trout and other smaller species like panfish or perch. The 9# is good for throwing larger flies(streamers) that imitate fish. You could use it to target pike, musky, stiper, and other large apex predators.
Also came from tenkara. Love the technique to death, but I’m starting to feel like anything you can do with a tenkara rod you can do with a fly rod. I find that I rarely bring it out with me nowadays. At least on my creek, I found only like one spot where I felt like I would rather have my Mizuchi.
Did you let your friend’s grandpa know that the reel is like 160 years old but fly fishing is millenia old?
What kind of fishing do you usually do with tenkara? To learn Western casting I’d hit the bluegill ponds with the 4wt. The casting is a little different but you should feel the rod load, as level line doesn’t really tenkara load rods. Any of those setups should be serviceable but you may want to replace the line.
This is awesome and those reels look really cool. Enjoy!
Great rods, I used a stoked for salmon and sea trout
Where and for what do you typically fish for? u/hipsterkitten gave a good outline
