This has happened four other times, I’ve tried looking it up, but I have no idea. Could it be my line is old or is it the guides tearing my line apart?

Looks frayed. Can happen with old line, toothy fish, snags… also check the eyelets of your rod. Some are ceramic and can chip and be very sharp and fray or cut line

  2. Do you have any scratches in your eyelets that may be cutting into your line? You could be pulling your lure over something sharp while retreaving as well.

What type of area are you fishing? If it’s occurring only near the lure end which is possibly in contact with rocks or coral, then it’s not a problem. Just cut above the damage section and retie.
If it’s throughout the line, then get rid of it.
I know with flourocarbon when fishing for pike, it can look like kinda like that with heavier line from their teeth. I cut off and retie.
