Parameters are PERFECT; 0 ammonia and nitrite. He lives with 3 black khuli loaches and a butt ton of shrimp. 20 gallon long, heavily planted. Botanicals galore. No matter how much I feed him he just won’t seem to gain weight in his tail area!

What exactly are you feeding your betta? If they aren’t taking the food, mix it up and provide some m9re variety for them. Find a new pellet, or try some flakes! Give them some bloodworms once or twice a week as a treat! 😁
Hilarious because I just saw a post the other day that had a picture of the first fat fish I’ve ever seen.
My betta used to look like he was eating and then spit it out when I first got him. I had to try allllll kinds of foods but he now really likes the fluval bug bits (I think that’s what they are called). I think my guy is just a picky eater and/or the pellets were too big. I hope your betta gets better!!
You can feed him smaller meals more frequently. Especially if he’s active. I feed until I see the belly expand and then stop. I soak the pellets in tank water before feeding to prevent expansion in belly.
I also feed blood worms or brine shrimp frequently as an evening meal. It’s a slow process but I do see progress with mine. My male is close to a healthy weight after a month (got him thin), my female is halfway to thin after 2 weeks (got her emaciated). I’m feeding them 2 times a day.
