Hello All,
I am picking up fishing as a hobby again, after I used to fish as a kid with my grandpa.
I thought about going to Peekskill in New York this Saturday to fish for the first time this year.
Do the regulations for both 1st and 2nd location apply? I will be north of the George Washington bridge.
If so, my questions is, giving that striped bass are in season, but black Bass aren’t – can I even fish during this time? How would I be able to “dodge” black bass and only aim for other fish.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but reading through regulations is new to me and I just want to make sure I am following them.
Thank you for your help.

I don’t have any helpful info for you, but I’ve been wondering a similar question. That being, how is what you are fishing for defined? In this situation, how would one define that you are fishing for black bass or stripers?
I assume there are actual objective facts that are pointed to, but I never see them in these regulations. May just not be looking hard enough.
Call the number provided at the top of the page and ask whoever answers.
Respectfully, you would be a fool to rely on answers from randos online rather than speak with a representative of the regulatory body.
I asked a wildlife resource officer a similar question and his answer was “we can tell what your fishing for based on your lure choice” so he told me to fish for what’s in season and any “accidental catches” should immediately be released. Granted this is in Tennessee and trout don’t usually eat bass lures. I would call your state agency and speak with someone on the phone so you can have a concrete answer about compliance.
There are a lot of species people fish for in the tidal Hudson. Unless you’re dropping lures onto black bass on nests in the spring (which would be very hard to find and do in those murky waters), a warden shouldn’t really bother you. If you’re fishing for stripers with lures, use big ones. I’ve striper fished in the Hudson extensively between Catskill and Newburgh and have never caught a black bass while out trolling for stripers. That might be different for the shore and tributary anglers though.
