first time betta owner here!! i got my fish from petco and they labeled it as a female koi, but the fins seem too large for a female in my opinion. i was wondering if anyone could help me out with identifying my betta

  1. female, they have rounder bellies, egg-spots (white-ish “ball” you may see that looks like it’s poking out of her belly), and smaller ventral fins than males. female bettas can and do have large fins, they are just typically smaller than the males of their breed

  2. Females CAN sometimes have larger fins, but it’s a lot trickier to tell with them compared with other fish. During breeding season, you might see a white dot lower on the belly for a female. Females also tend to be a bit stockier. If you’re around betta fish a lot, you can sometimes tell based on their behavior compared with males: males tend to make bubble nests and flare more often with a bigger beard, but if a fish does either of these doesn’t nessicarily mean that it is male.

Luckily, you got a decent shot of your fish with some light coming in from behind in the first image, and you can kind of see this triangle in the body, which is likely her ovaries. With all of the above in co sideration, my guess is that this IS a girl.
