Hello! I have been through it with this betta, Mr. Fishy (he had a better name, but after all this, it turned into Mr. Fishy, though my husband calls him "Million Dollar Fish"). I had him in a 2.5 gallon with a filter, heater and light. It had all live plants and was a beautiful set up. He ended up getting stressed out, one of the plants brought snails, he hated the snails and nearly died from stress. His fins ended up shredded and he could hardly swim.
I researched. Realized his tank was too small.and too bright. We turned it into a warm hospital tank with heavy tannins and he slowly got better.
Now, he has a 10 gallon tank hiding spots, filter, heater, more live plants that get scoured for snails before planting. He does have 1 larger snail friend who helps maintain his tank, that he tolerates. His fins have come back and he is an avid swimmer.
One problem though, I am having trouble keeping the plants alive in the dark water. Are there any plants that hold up to less light that anyone would recommend?
I did add a variety of pothos that will grow out of the top to help with the nitrogen exchange, though 1 betta and 1 snail in a 10 gallon will hardly wreck the water before a water change, lol.
Also- anyone else's betta "point" at things in the tank? I did a water change and had to clean up and replant some of his plants and he has spent yesterday and today "showing" me all the changes and will go back and forth from the glass to the object to make sure I see it!

Duckweed does ok with much light, however it’s hated on a lot. I personally think it’s nice and good for top cover. Just don’t let it take up too much room. Still need plenty of spots for your fish to get air from the surface.
Anubias does well i think! and mosses live java moss!
Cryptocoryne! They do very well even completely shaded. And they come in many sizes, shapes and colors to choose from. 🙂
What snail do you have? I got nerite snails and they all died. How did you introduce the snail into the aquarium?
