Hello, all.

I just acquired this Pelican Catch HDii 12 footer and was wondering if the holes in the photos are scupper plug holes. Will the kayak take on water without them? This is my first kayak that I've actually owned.

  1. You are correct. You’ll get some water on your feet and it will ride lower without plugs.

  2. Someone said plugs will make it ride higher, I’ve never heard that personally.

Scupper holes are for sit on top kayaks to allow water to flow out if it gets up into the cabin or storage area. It will float and is designed to have these.

This also means water might splash up through them which never bothered me (youre in a kayak, you’ll get wet). However, they make one-way scupper plugs to have the best of both worlds (drainage and no splash)

  3. I have the same kayak minus the foot pedals. The scupper holes are only there to drain water that comes overboard. I have scupper plugs in mine and the kayak stays very dry.

Look up the pvc mod you can do to the seat to add height. It will depend on your leg length with the pedal drive. But it’s an easy mod that helped my back and comfort level.

  4. I’m kayaking in coastal Pacific waters, so when water comes aboard, it drains. I’d never put plugs in my scuppers. If a sudden breaker sloshes water in – I’d like it to drain out.

Also, you might want to try mounting your kayak cart closer to the middle of your yak. I mount mine so that it’s slightly stern heavy, but because it’s almost balanced, I’m not carrying the weight when I’m hauling the yak to the water.
