I had posted a few days ago about my handsome boy Alastor. He was dealing with a bad case of dropsy and fin rot and the treatments were unable to help him. I want to say a huge thank you to all who offered advice and words of wisdom! I truly appreciated the help and will be locking the words away for next time. Sadly my update is Alastor passed Thursday night 😭. When I found him I wasn't sure what to do first, so I worked on getting my kid put to bed and then I sat at the kitchen counter and just cried. I'm going to miss my grumpy gills so much!
After having my cry sess I found a little box that I was using for some random jewelry. I folded up a paper towel to fit on the bottom of it and placed him in it then covered him with some rose petals from my flowers in a vase on ny counter. Then wrote his name on the lid with the date I brought him home and when he passed. Then buried him in the garden next to our bleeding heart bush.
The other pictures of when I first found him at petco(3/2/25) and brought him home(4/7/25). Then the pictures after that are about one a month or one ever couple months till February of 2026.
He was such a character with his RBF and side eye. In the beginning when I first got him I tried putting shrimp with him and he ate them. Had informed my husband and mother in law about it (we live with mother in law) we got a chuckle out of it and then a few weeks later my mother in law tried putting shrimp with him again 😑. He ate those too and I reminded her that I said he ate the first batch. Asked her why she gave him snacks 🤣? He was a very chill Mr. Fish and when we added a snail to his tank he became so curious. The snail would be on the move and not far behind would be Alastor trying to be sneaky and follow her, watching what she was doing 😆. He didn't make for a very good rogue.
When he got sick and ended up in the hospital tank he got a baby mystery snail from one of our hatched egg clutches and I tossed in a shrimp to see what he would do. They became his buddies funny enough so when he went back to his home tank so did the snail and shrimp. He enjoyed watching them and sharing hiding spots with them. Now his tank sits with his friends in them. The shrimp hasn't swam around much just hanging out in the coconut hut like she is waiting for Alastor to come home. The snail roams around the tank going in and out of the houses.
I don't know when I will get another betta, but I know I want one that's for sure! I can't let his tank sit empty for too long. Losing Alastor doesn't help the pain of losing my Greenie glowfish a couple weeks ago too. Luckily my birthday is next month so we will see what happens.
Rest well my handsome boy 😢😭! Enjoy your endless supply of bloodworms and brine shrimp!
