Is a lure retriever a good investment? Are these 2 listed at Bass Pro any good?

  1. I’ve only ever seen them work once before (not even in person, on a YouTube video), and it took the guy an hour of fiddling to get his lure back.

I had one like the first picture. I threw it away. More trouble than it was worth, by a lot. Didn’t work well.

  3. I have one of the telescoping poles with a wire coil at the end. It works really well

Had something called a rocket slug I bought cause I saw Tackle2ThePeople review and use it. Tried it out myself and it “works” but it’s a pain the ass and only works sometimes. It sits on the shelf in the basement collecting cobwebs and dust now. If I really want the lure because it’s my favorite I go swimming for it if it’s REALLY worth it.

  5. I keep one on hand. It’s paid for itself many times over. I use [this one](https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Jewel_Baits_Hound_Dog_Lure_Retriever/descpage-JBHDLR.html). It has worked best for me when my treble hook baits gets snagged. I’ll cut off whatever is tied on to my jig rod and tie the retriever on straight to the braid. Sometimes it’ll knock the lure out of the snag on the first drop. Most of the time I need to get the rings of the retriever to grab on to the trebles of my lure. Then I can pull it free. Sometimes the snagged hook gets bent and needs replacing, but better than loosing the whole thing. Hope this helps.

  6. Those Leland ones are nice, but only for really light (L or UL) lures. They’re not heavy enough to dislodge a bigger lure on heavier line.

I just make my own from 4 oz weights that I attach a snap onto.

One thing to keep in mind is that for any of these style lure retrievers to work optimally, you really need to be in a boat or kayak where you can get right above the snag and keep your line fairly tight. If you’re bank fishing, a telescopic retriever is your best option.

  7. I made my own off a YouTube video with a retractable dog leash, 2 2oz? sinkers, carabineer clip , and some zip ties.

That thing has saved a ton of ned rigs, and squarebills. I’ll see if I can find the link to the video, And edit it in for the link if I find it.

I added a carabiner clip to mine to clip it on my line.
