Hi all, im new to fishing and need some advice. I have an ugly stick GX2 medium action rod/reel combo with 8lb line. The bait im using is a 1/4oz beetle spin as ive hear they're pretty good for catching multiple types of fish. I'm just fishing in some local ponds, usually in the middle of a park. According to what I've read they have bass, trout, bluegill and channel catfish in them. Now my issue is I cant seem to catch anything…other than some sticks and plants. Im talking not even a bite. So im curious if im just using the wrong setup or just no luck. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

  1. i’ve been using basically the same setup, except i’ve got a green grub on the spinner

  2. Just keep trying new spots. And reel that in as slow as you can without losing its action.

  3. If you’re catching lots of sticks and plants you may be dragging the lure across the bottom. If this is the case, get a lighter jig head (maybe try 1/8) or speed up your retrieve a little if you’re going too slow

  4. A GX2 is a very soft rod that has trouble detecting bites. Really you want to use it with something like a treble or a hook that sets itself. You might have actually gotten some bites and not been able to tell, and then the fish got off. I would suggest trying a lure that would work better for your rod. A chatterbait works well, or an inline spinner like a mepps aglia #2 long.

Just to correct what you said it is a medium power rod. Action is how far down the rod it will bend before hitting the solid backbone. A go is a graphite and fibreglass composite rod that is slow to moderate slow action.

The 1/4 oz beetle spin (if I recall correctly) is one of the larger ones available so you might be missing some smaller fish but bass would likely get after these.

I’d recommend either trying a smaller one or getting some contrasting soft plastic grubs to swap out.

Some days they bite light colors(like the white grub you have here) and some days they go for darker ones(like black or green). Usually depends on water color, sunny vs cloudy, fish being wieners, etc..

  6. Downsize that beetle spin to a 1/8 or 1/16 and try different bodies. Don’t have to be the same brand or anything

Fish along cover or the edges

I’ve been having success with a similar setup. Mine has been a white 1/16th oz white jig head and small white swim bait.
