Hi! I recently rescued a beta fish from a dollar store (It was pretty sad). It came in this tank, and I plan on upgrading to a 3-gallon tank for with low flow water and a thermometer this weekend.

This is my first fish, so any advice, pointers or knowledge would be helpful. I have also been doing my research online.

Thank you

Please get at least a five gallon tank with a heater and a filter! You should also get an air pump and replace that rainbow gravel for substrate. Get real plants they are better than fake and can help keep water safe and clean.

That container is for transporting animals, not fish. It’s definitely not a tank for a fish. 5g minimum but 10g is better and will be easier to maintain

As others have said, 5 gallon minimum, but 10 gallons is even better and easier for a beginner to maintain. You’ll also have to do a fish-in-cycle so you’ll need an API Master Test Kit or similar for testing water parameters and some bottled bacteria like Tetra SafeStart.

    – 5 gallon tank
    – heater
    – filter
    – cave
    – silk plant

Otherwise he wont live long with this container and stress and die

  5. You need a 5 gallon tank with a filter and heater, and Mabye some lighting, no offense but you need a better tank 😕

  6. Ditch the small tub, tanks will go on sale at petco petsmart sometimes. 5 or 10 gallons are appropriate. Be forewarned: this will be expensive initially. A full proper set up is: tank, heater, light, filter, air stone, air pump, substrate, plants.

Sand is a good heavy substrate, fluval stratum is light but filled with minerals, and gravel is acceptable too.

If it seems like too much there are Facebook groups to rehome or sometimes local shops will accept fish as a donation.

The goal is to get your tank as close to a betta’s natural environment as possible. Keep them healthy with a varied diet and don’t over feed. Don’t be afraid to fill the tank up to the water line.

Also super super important, you’ll want to do a fish in cycle. Every tank needs a nitrogen cycle (long process short: waste build up bad, needs to convert to nitrates, is only possible with a cycle). I would keep yours in what you have now and in a separate level area set up your “permanent” tank.

I’m a person that doesn’t always pay attention to detail and don’t make the greatest money. This is my ten gallon for my betta.

A lot of times can be found online too. Aquarium co-op is good for live plants. Be careful in stores to make sure your plant is actually aquatic.

Hi! as everyone said, 5gal minimum, but 10 would be amazing! Live plants are also really great for betta if you can get some.

good luck, and thanks for saving him!!
