I have two black Tetras in a shoal with a school of 6 Neon Tetras. I'm now aware this is non-ideal, I did it on the recommendation of the pet store owner, they told me they would school just fine with the neons as if they were neons. For this reason I'm thinking it's stress spots (And that's it's ONLY on the black Tetra), but it's too late to return the Black Tetras and I'm unsure of how to rehome them.

Aware the water is on the hard side, I originally used city water but I'm now using RO, it's getting softer with every water change.

100% Ich they probably got it bc the move stressed them weakening their immune system… I would treat the tank it spreads fast. Even if the neon tetras don’t have it now they could by tomorrow.

Looks like ich to me! And if I can see right I see it on 4 fish in the pic!
Not really sure ro water is necessarily needed imo! But I’m a cichlid guy myself.
If the fish can handle it the best thing to fight ich off with is just temp! Get your temp up to around 84 if possible! Do it slowly (over a few hours or a day depending how low you already are)not at once!
Never had an issue with it not working and never lost a fish to ich either! Let the temp sit like that for some days. The heat doesn’t kill the ich on the fish only in the water column so once it falls off the fish it will die and get sucked into the filter and whatnot
Keep an eye on them and after you’ve noticed they look good again give it another day or two.

Now I have no clue if your fish can handle that temp short term or not so that’s on you to check but if they can. Which I would think they can then it will do the trick everytime. Best of luck you’ll figure it out!

I’ve never heard the term “stress spots”. Fish don’t get those. If their pattern changes due to stress, sure, but that’s typically not going to be observed in a small tetra.

    Ich.

Also, the two will be fine with the Neons. Don’t stress yourself out too.

Looks just like ich. Good luck and careful with the dosing. Try and use the lowest possible amount that will still work. When my tank had ich they tetras seemed okay, but the medication almost wiped them out. I lost 11 out of 15 tetras using Esha exit.

Neons are bad for this, they’re really prone to gettting it. It’s definitely ich, treat them because it will spread fairly quickly.
